Southport, North Carolina could be the site of a major port within the next few years. This international port would rival some of the busiest and most successful ports on the Eastern seaboard, including ports at Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia.
Local governments in Southport, Wilmington and Brunswick County are elated for the progress that this proposed port could bring not only to this state but surrounding states as well. The boost to the local economy is estimated in the billions, according to Claude Farrell, an economics professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and cold bring in over 3,000 jobs, said Thomas J. Edgar, Chief Executive Officer of the North Carolina State Ports Authority.
The building of this proposed international port would require approximately 600 acres, land that is currently owned by the Pfizer Corporation. Negotiations for the purchase of this land, at the price of $30 million dollars, have already begun.
"The economic boom to the county will be unheard of," Brunswick County Economic Development Director Steve Johnson said, as quoted in the Brunswick Beacon.
Pending Phase I and II environmental impact studies, the final acquisition of the Pfizer-owned property, and the proper private investment requirement, the construction of this port is anticipated to take place over the next 8 to 10 years.
